How It Works

The weight of a rectangular plate is calculated by multiplying its volume by the material density.

The Formula

Imperial: Weight (lbs) = Length (in) × Width (in) × Thickness (in) × Density (lbs/in³)

Metric: Convert mm to inches (mm × 0.0393701), calculate in lbs, then convert to kg (lbs × 0.453592)

Example

A 48" × 24" × 0.5" steel plate:

48 × 24 × 0.5 × 0.284 = 163.58 lbs

Material Densities

Material lbs/in³ kg/m³
Steel (A36) 0.284 7,861
Stainless Steel 0.289 8,000
Aluminum (6061) 0.098 2,713
Copper 0.321 8,890
Titanium (Grade 2) 0.163 4,510
Acrylic 0.043 1,190
Glass 0.091 2,520
Pine Plywood 0.025 692

When to Use a Metal Weight Calculator

Estimating Material Costs

Steel is sold by the pound. Knowing the weight of your plate lets you estimate material cost before ordering.

Shipping & Freight

Carriers price by weight. Calculate total plate weight (including quantity) to get accurate shipping quotes.

Structural Engineering

Engineers need dead load calculations for supports, foundations, and rigging. This tool gives you quick estimates for 8 common materials.
