Material and Construction

Siegmund tables are built from a hardneable X7 steel made in Germany. This material, whose composition is a trade secret, is clearly a high carbon steel, which means that with proper heat treatment it will be much stronger than a material like the A36 our fabricated tables are made from.

The core steel hardness of these tables measures aproximately 28-35 on the Rockwell C scale (280 to 340 Vickers), however the plasma nitriding process creates a very hard casing on an extremely thin part of the surface which boosts hardness to between 46 and 64 Rockwell C (450-850 Vickers). This process of hardending the steel provides abrasion resistance, and also means the material will resist bending and warping better than mild steels.

Put it another way, the thin outer shell of the steel on these tables is roughly the same hardness as the blade of a high quality knife. So the same characteristics that help keep a blade sharp, help protect the steel from softer materials scratching the surface. The plasma nitriding process also offers two other distinct advantages:

• It provides excellent corrosion resistance.
• It helps protect against weld spatter.

Process

Although certain aspects of the construction of Siegmund tables are similar to our fabricated tables, there are two notable differences:

• Siegmund tables use much thicker material, with approximately 1/2″ thick surfaces, as compared to our fabricated table’s 1/4″.
• These table’s entire faces are milled flat to within +/- .0025 inches per foot. So along the length of a 10′ span the maximum deflection would be only .025″.

Please note, although casters are useful for mobility, they will decrease the usable weight capacity of the table by approximately 80%. So for extremely heavy projects, you’ll need to choose one of the fixed leg options.

Welding Table Construction

If you examine the underside of the table you can see the construction process. The heavy steel surface is supported by intersecting ribs which are seam welded at the rib intersections, and spot welded to the top.

Notes on Shipping

As you can imagine, these massive tables can be a little challenging to ship and receive. When we ship any of our tables the carriers require us to put them on a pallet. But normal pallets won’t work, so we have custom skids manufactured specifically for shipping these bad boys.

These skids are then loaded onto a truck at our end via forklift, and we use long fork extensions to put them in the truck from the end of the table. Shipping companies only carry a small pallet jack on the truck, and those jacks absolutely can’t move these tables. So on the reverse end it’s going to require a similar setup for unloading purposes.

At a bare minimum you’ll need 72″ forks to lift the table out of the truck. Amazon sells a bunch of extensions in case you need them. These 72″ fork extensions are the bare minimum that will get the job done, and these 84″ fork extensions will be better. When buying forklift extensions pay particular attention to the width of your forks to make sure you get the right size!

If you can get heavier duty fork extensions we HIGHLY recommend it! Especially if you order your table along with several accessories that will ship on top. It’s possible to get these tables up to nearly 2,000 pounds, and the light duty extensions probably won’t cut it.
